Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Wooden Planter - (Download our guide here)
Step 1: Assemble the First Side
-
Grab piece #1 and piece #2. Align them to form an L-shape—as shown in the image. Use the pre-drilled holes on piece #1 to drive two nails into piece #2, securing them together.
Step 2: Position the Bottom Piece
-
Take piece #4 (the bottom) and position it between the L-shape you just created (pieces #1 and #2) and piece #3 (your third side) as shown the picture.
- Tip: Lay piece #3 flat underneath as support to help hold everything in place and make nailing easier.
Step 3: Attach the Bottom to One Side
- Using the pre-drilled hole in piece #2, hammer one nail upward into piece #4 to connect that side to the bottom.
Step 4: Attach the Other Side
-
Flip the planter so piece #2 is on the bottom and piece #3 is on top (refer to image).
-
Use the pre-drilled hole in piece #3 to hammer one nail from piece #3 into the bottom piece #4.
-
Then, insert one nail from piece #1 into piece #4 using the pre drilled hole to secure the structure.
-
Step 5: Add Last Side Frame
-
Now it's time to complete the planter shape!
-
Align piece #5 with the open end. It should sit flush against pieces #2, #3, and #4.
-
Using the pre-drilled holes, hammer in two nails into side panels #2 and #3, and one into the bottom panel #4 to fully secure piece #5 in place.
Step 6: Add the Finishing Touches
-
Now that your planter box is built, it's time to get creative!
-
Paint it with fun colors or designs
-
Add stickers, stencils, or your name to make it one-of-a-kind
-
Let the paint dry before adding soil or flowers
-
- Bonus: Everyone at the workshop gets a mini flower from Halters Market to plant in their finished box! You can also fill it with your own soil and seeds to grow something from scratch that are available to purchase at the store.
Pro Tips for a Long-Lasting Planter
- Make sure all sides are straight before you nail.
- Tap nails gently to start, then hammer firmly.
- Ask an adult to help hold pieces steady.
- Let paint dry fully before planting.
- Add small holes to the bottom for drainage (optional).
- Choose you favorite flower and make the planter shine!
- Snap a photo of your finished planter and tag us!
